NJEA demands action on SCR-2
Hundreds of NJEA members descended on Senate President Steve Sweeney’s West Deptford office to urge him to keep the promise he made to NJEA members five months ago. After jamming the phone lines of his office on the previous day, members went to his office to ensure that their voices were heard.
Wearing red and carrying signs that sent strong messages to Sweeney, members spent two full hours making their demands known. Chants of “post the bill, pass the bill, “You say cut back, we say fight back,” and “No pensions, no peace” made it clear that NJEA members were not going to stand by idly while the funding failure threatening their pensions remains unaddressed.
NJEA Vice President Marie Blistan addressed the crowd of nearly 400. “Senator Steve Sweeney, your failure to post and pass SCR-2 puts you on the same line as Chris Christie. Failure to post and pass this resolution gives you the same legacy as Chris Christie. Senator Sweeney, failure to post and pass this resolution is not an option. It is your moral and fiscal responsibility. It is your job.”
Blistan further stated that this fight is not over and urged all members to continue to call Senator Sweeney’s office and demand he post SCR-2, the resolution that will put quarterly pension payments on the November 8th ballot.
